A college instructor pleaded innocent yesterday to charges that she bit her 87-year-old mother so badly that police discovered pieces of flesh on the floor of the family home.

Barbara Mortenson, who told police she had been taking the controversial anti-depressant drug Prozac, was charged with attempted murder, elderly abuse, battery, mayhem and assault.

A municipal court judge set bail on the 61-year-old woman at $500,000.

The mother, Mildred Mortenson, 87, was listed in critical but stable condition at a hospital.

According to police who responded to a report of a fight at the Mortenson home Wednesday, the elderly woman was found lying on the floor with 20 human bites on her face, neck and arms.

"Several bites on her arm were chewed down to the bone and pieces of raw flesh were left on the carpet," the police report said.

The daughter, a teacher of modern languages at the University of San Francisco, told police she had been taking Prozac.

There have been a number of reports recently that the drug causes suicide or violent acts. The manufacturer, Eli Lilly & Co., has denied claims the drug is dangerous to users.
